Low Vision

At Bridle Opticians we work closely with people suffering from Macular degeneration as well as Glaucoma and Diabetes endeavouring to help them make the most of the vision which they retain rather than just mourning the vision they have lost.

Sometimes we may be able to help with stronger spectacles; sometimes we may find a magnifier useful but always, we find listening and explaining is really helpful.

Our adaptive equipment can be helpful tools. These include;

  • Handheld illuminated magnifiers that are eminently portable and useful where you are not in control of the lighting environment;
  • Stand magnifiers for those tasks where you need your hands free;
  • Bar magnifiers where the problem is one of difficulty following the line of text and confusion from other surrounding text.
  • For people that have problems seeing the TV the TVMax offers 2.1x magnification with the option to focus each eye independently.

We spend a great deal of time discussing lighting with our patients; people still seem to think that they should be able to read in the dark!! One of the best task lamps is available from the RNIB; see their website (link below) under lighting/task lighting.
